✦ Understanding Your Chart
The Science Behind
Your Kundali
#1 Input
What The Calculation Needs
A Kundali requires exactly three precise inputs — your date of birth, exact time of birth (ideally to the minute), and place of birth (converted to latitude and longitude).
Birth time is the single most sensitive input. Because Earth rotates approximately 1° every 4 minutes, the ascendant degree shifts continuously — a few minutes' error can change the entire house layout of your chart.
#2 Astronomy
The Astronomical Layer
Ephemeris Lookup: Every kundali computation consults astronomical algorithms giving the exact longitude of each graha (planet) along the ecliptic for your birth moment. The nine grahas used are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes — Rahu and Ketu.
Ayanamsa Correction: This is what makes Vedic astrology different from Western astrology. We subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa (~24°) from each planet's tropical longitude to get its sidereal position — the number that determines which rashi (sign) it's placed in.
Ascendant (Lagna): The zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment. Computed from local sidereal time, birth latitude, and the obliquity of the ecliptic through spherical trigonometry.
#3 Vedic Convention
Vedic Interpretation Layer
House Placement: We use the whole-sign system — the ascendant's entire sign becomes the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Each of the 12 houses governs specific life areas.
Nakshatras & Dasha: The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras (13°20' each). The Moon's nakshatra at birth determines the starting point of the Vimshottari Dasha — a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that drives predictive timing in Vedic astrology.
Yogas & Strength: Specific combinations of planet placement, conjunction, or aspect that classical texts name and interpret — such as Gajakesari Yoga, Budhaditya Yoga, and the five Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas.
